Abstract
687,540. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1951, No. 3815/51. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Group XL (c)] The invention relates to communication systems in which the gain of a repeater is controlled by a pilot wave transmitted with the signals. Such a system comprises an amplifier having a positive feed-back path between output and input to cause the amplifier to oscillate and a rectified negative feed-back path between the said input and output for the oscillation frequency, the pilot being applied to the said input for amplification extracted from the said output, rectified and then applied to the input to control the amplitude of oscilla. tion. The oscillation may then be used to operate a thermistor controlling the gain of a repeater. The anode circuit of the valve shown is tuned to 2000 c/s. by a circuit 5, 7 and positive feed-back to cause oscillation at this frequency is derived from this circuit and applied to the cathode. A further circuit 6, 16 tuned to this frequency feeds part of the output to. a voltage doubler rectifier 10, 11 and applies the rectified voltage in a negative sense to the control grid. The pilot, which has a frequency of 60 kc/s. and is also applied to the control grid, is amplified in the valve, selected by an anode tuned circuit 4, 21 and applied to a voltage doubler rectifier 22, 23, the rectified output being applied to the control grid to vary the oscillation output from circuit 5 in dependence upon the pilot amplitude. Specification 682,189 is referred to.
