Abstract
<PICT:0687455/III/1> Viscous liquids are de-aerated by directing a rotating jet of the liquid on to the wall of a rotating bell-shaped member 12 having a radial section comprising a parobola or hyperbola merging into a circle, and a straight part 14. The member is mounted on a rotary shaft 1 which carries a second bell-shaped member 13. A flange 17 on the second member coacts with a stationary sump 24 to form an enclosed space. Liquid supplied through a bore 3 in the shaft emerges as jets from holes 4. The liquid flows down the inner wall of the member 12 to collect in the vicinity of the straight part as a ring of partially de-aerated liquid having air bubbles floating on the inner surface. The partially deaerated liquid passes through perforations in the part 14 for further treatment on the wall of the member 13. The completely de-aerated liquid flows between the wall of the member 13 and a hollow body 23 on the shaft to the sump. Suction is applied to the enclosed space by a tube 11 to remove the air liberated from the liquid and to assist in the destruction of air bubbles. In a modification an impeller on the shaft forces heated air through the enclosed space to remove the air liberated from the liquid, and the de-aerated liquid is collected in an annular chamber surrounding the second member.
