Abstract

687,311. Regenerating photographic bleaching solutions. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Dec. 27, 1950 [Dec. 30, 1949], No. 31394/50. Class 98 (ii). An exhausted photographic bleaching solution containing an alkali metal ferricyanide, ferrocyanide ions, and an alkali metal bromide is regenerated by adding thereto an amount of a terminal primary alkylamine, an aliphatic or aromatic carbonamide or carbonimide, an aromatic sulphonamide, or melamine, in which the amino, amido, or imido nitrogen is substituted by at least one bromine atom, such that it will release about one molar equivalent of bromine for each molar equivalent of ferrocyanide ion present in the exhausted bleaching solution. An acid or acid salt (sulphuric acid, sulphamic acid, citric acid, hydrobromic acid, or an alkali bisulphate) and an additional bromide may be added to the exhausted bleaching solution. The bleaching solution may contain, in addition to the ferricyanide and bromide, a buffering agent, such as a di-alkali metal phosphate, and a corrosion preventative, such as disodium phosphate, sodium tetraphosphate, or sodium hexametaphosphate. Brominereleasing compounds specified include N-bromobutylamine, N-dibromopentylamine, N-hexabromotriethylene tetramine, N-dibromopropionamide, N-bromourea, N: N<SP>1</SP>-dibromo-N: N<SP>1</SP>- diphenylurea, N-bromophthalimide, N-tetrabromobenzene-m-disulphonamide, and N-tribromomelamine. In example 1, a mixture of sodium N-bromo-p-toluenesulphonamide and aqueous hydrobromic acid is added to an exhausted bleaching solution containing potassium ferricyanide and bromide, dibasic sodium phosphate, and sodium bisulphate. In examples 2 to 5, N-dibromobenzenesulphonamide, potassium bromide, and sodium bisulphate; N- bromoacetamide and aqueous hydrobromic acid; N-bromosuccinimide, sodium bromide, and sulphamic acid; and N-bromobenzamide and aqueous sulphuric acid are added to an exhausted bleaching solution.
