Abstract

687,290. Uniting by fusion. YATES, H. July 16, 1951 [April 27, 1950], No. 10388/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXVII] For supporting and rotating cylindrical vessels during welding, a number of separate individually stable bench frames are provided each mounted across and individually adjustable along an aligned bed and each provided with at least one electromotor driving a roller on which a cylindrical vessel can bear and control means whereby the rollers of different frames can be controlled to rotate at the same or different speeds. In one embodiment a bench frame b, Fig. 1, is mounted transversely of a pair of rails a and is longitudinally adjustable thereon, being secured thereto by bolts a<SP>1</SP>. Rollers c on one side of the frame b are driven from an electromotor f by a shaft f<SP>3</SP> and gearing c<SP>2</SP> while rollers d which are adjustable across the frame b are driven from the gearing c<SP>2</SP> by a telescopic shaft g. The shaft g may be removed to allow the rollers d to function as idlers. Five such frames b are described connected to a D.C. supply system so that the rollers of three frames driven by their D.C. motors may all rotate at one speed while the rollers of the other two frames may all rotate at another speed. The field of the D.C. generator is potentiometer controlled and is supplied from an exciter driven with the generator by an A.C. constant-speed motor. In a modification the shaft g is dispensed with and the rollers dare driven by a separate motor. In order that the vessel may be traversed beneath a stationary electrode, in another embodiment bench frames are mounted on trolleys 9, Figs. 8 and 9, which are driven along rails s by wheels r driven by separate motors. An A.C. motor driving rollers and wheels may be employed. The trolleys are coupled by an adjustable bar u. Specification 628,689 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the frames are mounted on rails on trolleys which are driven by gearing from the bench frame motors.
