Abstract

687,194. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. March 3, 1948 [March 6, 1947], No. 6697/48. Class 39(i) A circuit for generating high frequency oscillators of the kind embodying a discharge tube wherein a beam of electrons emitted by a cathode passes through an aperture in a plane anode inclined to the beam at an angle in the neighbourhood of 45 degrees and strikes a secondary emission electrode parallel to the anode, has the voltages on and distance between the anode and secondaryemission electrode such that, in the absence of oscillatory voltage, the primary electrons just impinge on the secondary-emission electrode and the time of transit between the secondary-emission electrode and the anode is in the neighbourhood of one whole period of the oscillations to be generated. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the beam from the hollow cathode 6 passes through the focusing electrodes 7, 8 and an aperture 3 in the copper disc anode 2 to strike the part 5 of the secondary-emission electrode 4, the part 5 being at a distance of 1.5 mms. from the anode 2. A glass wall 10 is sealed on top of the secondaryemission electrode 4 to take a cooling liquid. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 two cathodes 13, 14 and two pairs of focusing means 15, 17, 16, 18 formed as bodies of revolution are provided. Two strips 20, 21 which function as a Lecher line terminate in parts which are parallel to the apertured anode 12 and are coated with caesium oxide to form secondary-emission electrodes. With a voltage on the anode of 1400 volts and on the secondary-emission electrodes of 700 volts, oscillations may be produced in a wave length range of from 3 to 5 cms., the efficiency being approximately 20 per cent at a wave length of 5 cms. The mean voltage on the secondary-emission electrode or electrodes is chosen such that, for the anode voltage obtaining, the secondary emission coefficient has approximately its maximum value. The ratio between the voltage on the secondaryemission electrode and that on the anode is preferably chosen to be substantially equal to the square of the sine of the angle which the electron beam makes with the anode plane.
