687,170. Propelling ships. GARDNER, R. Nov. 2, 1951. [Aug. 3, 1950] No. 19453/50. Class 114. An oscillating vane propeller for a ship comprises a vane 1 of hydrofoil section mounted in a block 3 which is reciprocated in guideways 4 disposed athwartship by means including a Rapson slide mechansim. The vane is continuously oscillated about its pivot 2 during the travel of the block. The Rapson slide mechanism comprises a lever 8 fulcrumed on a pin 9 and having a slot 11 in which slides a slipper 10 connected to a bar 7<SP>1</SP> reciprocable in fixed guides 7<SP>2</SP> by a crank 6 on a drive shaft 5 through a connecting rod 7. The lever carries a slipper 13 slidable along a slot 14 in the block 3. The shaft 2 of the vane carries a toothed pinion 15 or gear segment meshing with a rack 16 slidable in a slot 17 in the block 3. The rack is reciprocated in a manner similar to the block by a lever 19, carrying a slipper 20 slidable in a slot 18 of the rack, actuated through a second Rapson slide mechanism (not shown) from the shaft 5. The lever 19 is fulcrumed on a pin 21 which is oscillated by an eccentric on a shaft 23. A phase difference of substantially 90 degrees exists between the eccentric and the crank 6 so that a differential motion is produced between the block 3 and the rack 16 which causes partial rotation of the pinion 15 and the vane 1. When the block is in the extreme end positions of the guideways 4 the vane is substantially parallel with the fore and aft axis of the ship and when the block is in the central position the vane has a maximum inclination to the said axis. The fulcrum pin 21 may alternatively be driven from the shaft 5 through a linkage.
