Abstract

555,843. Lifeboats; driving-gear for screw propellers. ALLEN, C. W. April 1, 1942, No. 4373. [Classes 113 (ii) and 114] A hand-operated propelling mechanism for lifeboats and the like is constructed with a sprocket drive for the propeller 26 comprising a sprocket 28, Fig. 6, on a shaft 27 having a bevel-gear connection with wheels 30, 31 each of which has a ratchet drive operative in one direction only so that oscillating motion of the sprocket 28 is converted into a uniform motion of the propeller. The sprocket 28 is operated by means of a chain 60 which also passes over an idler sprocket 52 in a casing C, and the chain is reciprocated by a reciprocating rod 61 operated directly by occupants of the boat pushing on handles 75, Figs. 2 and 3, which are mounted on sleeves 74 connected to the rod 61 or to a similar rod 61a Fig. 2, which drives the rod 61. Four handles 75 may be fitted to each sleeve 74 and an arm 81 on one sleeve may engage a guide rod 80 to prevent rotation of the rod 61a, which is mounted to slide in bearings secured to the centres of the thwarts so that the handles can be actuated by persons on either side of the boat. The boat is steered by a steering column 21, which is attached to a torpedo-shaped housing E, and which is rotated by reductive gearing operated by a handle 44, A pointer 45 indicates the direction of propeller thrust. The rod 61 is formed with guide roller 68 which slides on one of two rods 66, 65, Fig. 7, which strengthen the casing C, and the rod 61 is connected to one of the links of the chain 60. The boat may be of wood or metal and when of metal has a stern casting D, Figs. 2 and 3, shaped to form a recess B for the propeller and comprising two rear plates 8, and a forwardly extending tongue 9 secured to the keel 4, the parts 8, 9 being reinforced by a vertical rib to extending up wardly at 11 so as to be welded to the stem post 5. Between the plates 8 the rib 10 is expanded to form a well 12 for the passage of the bearing sleeve 6 which supports the shaft 27. The garboard plates 14 of the boat are welded to the tongue 9 and to the plates 8 at the points 15, 16, and the first broad plate 14a, Fig. 3, is welded or riveted to the upper outer edges of the plates 8, the stern post 5, and to the edge of the garboard plates. The casing 3 is supported from the casting D by a brace 90, and at its forward end by a forked column 7. Specification 483,801 is referred to.
