Abstract

687,111. Regulating reciprocating pumps. BASTIAN & ALLEN, Ltd., and COX, W. J. G. April 20, 1951 [April 24, 1950], No. 9988/50. Class 102 (i) [Also in Group XXXV] A pumping apparatus includes a reciprocating pump having its inlet or delivery valve of the kind which is automatically opened for the appropriate periods by the action of the fluid therein, a magnet associated with the valve and arranged to cooperate with a part of magnetic material to hold the valve off its seat, and control apparatus whereby the magnetic force acting on the valve can be varied progressively between a force sufficient to hold the valve continuously in its open position, when it is next opened by the action of the fluid thereon and thus render the pump inoperative, and a force insufficient materially to affect the normal closing of the valve. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which an electrode boiler A is supplied from a source of electrical power E or is fed with water by a pump F driven by an electric motor F<SP>3</SP>. The inlet valve F<SP>2</SP> is controlled by an electromagnet J having coil J' supplied by a transformer K in the supply line D so that the output of the pump is varied according to the current consumption of the boiler; a rheostat K<SP>1</SP> varies the current in the coil J<SP>1</SP> relatively to the current in the supply line. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which the coil M' is mounted on a core M which is adjustable by lever N to vary the magnetic effect on the valve L and in such an arrangement, the rheostat K<SP>1</SP> would be unnecessary. In alternative arrangements, the core is partly surrounded by an adjustable flux-diverting member. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement in which the valve stem L' is formed as a permanent magnet and a soft iron control member P is adjustable on a guide P<SP>1</SP>. A relief valve H<SP>4</SP> actuated by the pressure of the teed water supply may be fitted.
