Abstract

A wrought austenitic precipitation hardened alloy has the following composition: Ni 15.0-35.0 per cent, Cr 7.0-20.0 per cent, Mo or W or both 2.0-5.0 per cent; Ti 1.3-1.9 per cent, Al not more than 0.4 per cent, C less than 0.1 per cent, Mn or Si or both 0.3-3.0 per cent, impurities such as P, Cu, S, N up to 1.0 per cent and Fe the balance. In making the alloys Fe, Ni and Mo are melted in a furnace having a magnesia or mixed magnesia and alumina crucible or lining, the melt is deoxidised with a Ca-Si alloy and an inert slag is added, ferro-alloys such as ferro-chromium and ferro-titanium, e.g. one containing 27.0-32.0 per cent Ti or one containing 30.0 per cent Ti and less than 2.4 per cent Al with the balance iron are then added with the deoxidizers through the slag and the mixture is stirred. The alloy is poured into a ladle and held and cast by bottom pouring into a chill mould. In the production of turbine rotor discs the alloy is heated to 1550-1700 DEG F and forged in stages with intermediate reheatings to within the same temperature range. The article is then solution-treated at 1800-2000 DEG F and aged at 1300-1450 DEG F. Ageing treatment may be carried out by moderately rapid heating to the ageing temperature, ageing at 1350-1450 DEG F for 4-20 hours, cooling from the initial ageing temperature to a low ageing temperature of 1175-1250 DEG F in 1-10 hours, holding at this temperature for 8-24 hours and cooling in the furnace or in air to room temperature. Specifications 232,656, [Class 82(i)], 375,777, 461,534, 531,466, 583,845, 638,007 and 686,764 are referred to.
