Abstract
686,646. Folding wings for aircraft. BLACKBURN & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and BRUMBY, H. May 15, 1951. No. 11334/51. Class 4. In an aircraft wing which is formed as three sections of which the inboard section is fixed and the two outer sections are displaceable to fold upwardly and downwardly into substantially vertical positions to lie adjacent one another, with the inboard fixed section connected by an interanl hinge at the top to. the upswinging central section the other end of which is connected by an interanl hinge at the bottom to the downswinging outer section, the inboard and outer sections are interconnected by links connected to a centrally pivoted lever within the centre section such that the movement of the foldable wing sections takes place synchronously. Each wing cornprises a root portion 1 secured to the fuselage 4, a centre portion 2 and a tip portion 3. The portion 1 carries an inset hinge or hinges 5, latch or latches 20, and a rigid bracket 9 to the extremity of which is pivoted a single jack or, as shown, a pair of aligned jacks 10, 11. The wing portions 2, 3 are connected by a cranked bracket 8 pivotally connected to the portion 2 at 6, to the portion 3 at 7 and to the outer end of the jack 11 at a point on the longer arm of the bracket. A double arm lever 12 is centrally pivoted within the portion 2 and is connected by links 13, 14 to the extremities of the jacks 10, 11. The end panels 15, 16 of the wing portions 2, 3 are connected by links 17, 18 which, at their point of interconnection are connected by a further link 19 to the extremity of the longer arm of the bracket 8. A further latch 21 is provided on the outer end of the portion 2, the latches 20, 21 holding the wing in the spread position. When folded, the wing portions 2, 3 lie substantially vertical with their undersurfaces adjoining.
