Class 142(i) [Also in Group XL(b)] In apparatus for punching Jacquard cards controlling pattern thread selection in textile manufacturing machines (e.g. a carpet loom) the predesigned master pattern is traversed by a stepping carriage so that individual coloured pattern elements (each corresponding to a single stitch) are illuminated and successively scanned by a photocell and a three-colour rotating filter, and the output of the cell is synchronously switched to control three thyratrons respectively corresponding to the filter colours, which conduct or cut-off in successive group combinations representing the colours of the scanned elemerits to set up corresponding relay contact combinations, each electrically operative to successively disable one of an array of mechanically operated punches producing Jacquard cards' with rows of coded perforations representing the colours of successive elements in the master pattern; there being provided stepping switches in co-operation with relay controlled stepping motors to automatically traverse each element of a line and each line of the master pattern through the photocell field, and to count the rows of holes whereby spaced lacing holes may be punched at predetermined intervals and each card may be completed by rows of uncoded holes after a predetermined number of coded rows have been punched. A row of holes may comprise two groups representing two successive stitches, the controlling impulses for punching the first group being electrically stored until the arrival of the impulses for punching the second group, when both groups are punched simultaneously; and coding may be effected by the presence or the absence of a particular hole. According to the Provisional Specification the apparatus may control looms directly.
