686,431. Plate heat-exchangers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. Jan. 29, 1951 [Jan. 31, 1950], No. 2182/51. Class 64 (iii) A heat-exchanger is built up from rectangular plates 1 between the edges of which flat strips 2 are welded to form alternate channels for fluid media flowing in mutually perpendicular directions, at least one set of channels being in communication with a distributing or collecting manifold. At the corners of the plates, the strips may be broadened by pieces 3, which may be provided with perforations aligned with holes in the plates through which bolts or tie rods can be passed to hold the structure together during welding. Alternatively the plates may be held together during welding by a framework with mounting bolts. Each strip may be welded to a plate before assembly of the pile. Fig. 3 shows the plates 1 projecting beyond the strips 2 the channels between the edges of the plates being filled in by the welding bead. Instead of completely filling the channels with the welding beads, angle welds may be formed. The plates may be embossed or stamped to increase rigidity or separate supporting elements such as ribs, strips or corrugated plates may be used. Figs. 5 and 6 show the heat-exchanger provided with manifolds 7 to supply and discharge the heat-exchange media. Angle-irons 4 are welded to the edges of the pile running at right angles to the planes of the plates, these angle-irons being bound by angle-irons 5 running along the other edges. A heat-exchanger suitable for use as a low-pressure steam boiler is also described. In this the plates are arranged vertically and surrounded by a jacket, the space between the jacket and the pile together with the vertical passages forming the boiler space.
