A toy locomotive having a device for emitting puffs of vapour may also have means for periodically emitting sound. In Figs. 1, 2, a simple air pump fitted with a non-return valve is actuated by an eccentric 5 on one of the axles 6 of the locomotive and is connected by a tube to a vapourizing chamber 11 containing an electric heating element 14 surrounding a wick 17 which contacts a vapour-forming medium such as a hydro-carbon oil. The element 14 is connected via a switch 26 to current supply from the track which may be of the 2-rail or third rail type. Puffs of vapour are caused by the charges of air from the pump expelling volatalized liquid from the chamber 11 through a pipe 23 to the chimney 24. Cam driven, crank or solenoid operated means, or a separate electric motor in the locomotive or tender are also specified for actuating the air pump. Sound producing means may comprise a reed operated by the air pump or a second pump. Alternatively there may be provided an electric buzzer of which the circuit is made and broken by cam operated contacts or a commutator device. The vapour and sound emitting means may be controlled by a solenoid so that they are inoperative whenever the energizing current supplied to the track falls below a predetermined value as might occur, for example, when the current is reduced to slow down the locomotive. According to the Provisional Specification, wax may be used as a vapour-forming medium.
