Abstract

1411752 Sound producing devices METTOY Ltd 1 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 56010/71 Heading G5J [Also in Division A6] - A toy vehicle carries a sound producing device emitting alternately two audible tones, thus simulating the siren of an ambulance, police car, fire engine, &c. In one form, a sound generator 10 is energized from a battery 11 through a heat controlled switch 20, 21 in parallel with a resistance 22. When the wire 20 of the switch warms up, it expands, closes the contacts 21 and shorts the resistance 22 to supply a greater current to the generator 10, which emits a different tone. The wire 20 then cools down to reopen the contacts 21 and restore the position shown. In another form, the switch is operated by a flasher bulb (17), Fig. 5 (not shown), mounted on the toy vehicle to simulate a flashing light. In other forms, the sound generator is energized by one or both of two switch-controlled batteries (11, 13), Fig. 1 (not shown), in series; by a single battery connected through a resistor (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), shorted by a single switch (12); or two separate sound generators (10, 16), Fig. 3 (not shown), in parallel are alternately energized through a simple switch. The sound generator or generators can each comprise a ferrite pot, open at one end, containing an energizing coil and with a vibrating reed armature adjacent the open end, a transistor combined with the generator operating it as a self-maintained oscillator. Other forms of switch, e.g. including contacts operated by a small flywheel rotated by movement of the toy vehicle, or by a balance wheel operating system, or a pendulum, may be employed.
