Abstract

In the catalytic oxidation of ethylene with oxygen to ethylene oxide, helium is added as diluent. An ethylenic feed such as cracked gas, together with oxygen and helium to give approximately 5 per cent ethylene and 6 per cent oxygen in the mixture may be fed through a multi-tubular reactor containing silver at 220-350 DEG C. and 1-20 atm. Ethylene oxide is absorbed, e.g. in water, CO2 then removed, e.g. in ethanolamine, and the residual gas recycled. The oxygen may be obtained by air fractionation and added to the recycle gas. Part of the recycle stream is purged to remove inert gases, helium being recovered by compressing, condensing with the aid of nitrogen from the air fractionation, and stripping. Helium may also be stripped from the solvents used in the absorption.
