Abstract
686,105. Breaking creases in folding-boxes. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Aug. 31, 1950 [Sept. 30, 1949], No. 25089/49. Class 94(i) A method of feeding collapsed cartons comprises withdrawing the leading carton from a stack or pack by suction applied at a position on one side of the longitudinal score line on that side of the carton so as to leave the portion of the carton on the other side of the score freely extending, and, while the carton is held by the suction, pivoting the extending portion about said score line through 180 degrees so as to cause the carton firstly to open and then collapse in the opposite direction. Suction arms 14, formed with series of suction nozzles 27, are pivotally carried by radial arms 16 extending from a vertical shaft 18 which is intermittently rotated by Geneva wheel mechanism 21 so that each suction arm is moved in succession from a carton seizing position adjacent a carton magazine 11 to a carton opening position, then to a carton discharge position. The suction arms 14 are rocked about their pivots in the radial arms 16 by the oscillation of a cam member 36 once for each partial rotation of the Geneva wheel means 21, upper extensions 32 of the suction arms 14 carrying rollers 33 running in a cam groove 34 in the member 36, the member 36 being oscillated by a link 37 eccentrically mounted on a driving shaft 26. As the leading suction arm 14 approaches the carton seizing position it is rocked inwardly to clear the leading carton 12 then outwardly so that its suction nozzles 27 engage the carton adjacent the edge of its overlapping seam, Fig. 3, to leave a portion 38 of the carton on the other side of the seam freely extending. The carton is then moved out of the magazine, against a yieldable stop 39 and fixed stop 41 associated with the magazine, and carried around to a position where the leading edge of the carton is engaged by a recess 42 in a fixed guide member 43, pivoting movement of the suction arm then rocking the carton inwardly to commence its opening out, the carton collapsing in the opposite direction as it is carried around to the discharge position. Stops 47 on the arms 14 support the face of the carton during its opening and closing. The suction is cut off as the carton reaches its discharge position where it is removed by projections 48 on a chain conveyer 49. Suction is applied to the nozzles 27 through the hollow interior of the arms 14 from a suction chamber 28 having an upper disc-like wall 29 rotatable with the suction device and through which the arms 14 extend, a fixed inner wall 31 cutting off the suction where required. Specification 686,103, [Group XVI], is referred to.
