Abstract

685,810. Feeding sheets. POPE, D. H. Jan. 26, 1951, No. 2021/51. Class 100 (i). Sheet-separa,tors.-A suction roller 20, rotatably-mounted on a hollow shaft 17 carried in arms 12 pivoted about a fixed shaft 13, is adapted to be lowered into contact with the top of a pile of sheets 10, is then raised with the top sheet attached thereto to a position where a gear-wheel 23 on the roller engages a constantlyrotating gear-wheel 31, whereupon the roller is rotated to feed the sheet clear of the pile. The non-rotatable hollow shaft 17 is connected to a source of suction by a pipe 19, and the roller 20, comprising a perforated metal shell, is mounted by ball-bearings on the shaft. A metal block 27 fixed on the shaft 17 has a lower arcuate surface close to the inner surface of the roller 20 formed with a recess 29 to constitute a suction chamber which is connected to the source of suction through holes in the block 27 and shaft 17. One rocker arm 12 is extended at 14 and connected to an arm 16 which is reciprocated to cause the roller 20 to be raised and lowered. When the roller is lowered to bring the gear-wheel 23 out of mesh with the gearwheel 31, rotation thereof may be stopped by a brake mechanism. Sheet-guides.-Two wires 25, engaging peripheral grooves 24 in the roller 20, are secured to cross member 26 of the arms 12, and prevent the sheet, on rotation of the roller, from curling about the roller. They are extended at the front to divert the sheet into a shoot (not shown).
