Abstract

685,767. Cathode ray tubes. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 12, 1951 (Nov. 11, 1949], No. 28989/49. Class 39(i) A cathode ray tube of the type having a flared envelope and a transparent end face is provided with an external transparent shield of a synthetic resin covering at least the end face so as to provide protection against the effect of implosion of the tube when in use, which shield, or a frame supporting the shield, extends around the periphery of the end face and overlies a part of the side of the tube envelope so as to be supported by the flared part of the envelope. A space may be left between the shield and the end face of the tube and filled with a transparent liquid or jelly. To improve the contrast ratio the shield may be coloured, preferably a neutral grey, or it may have a light-absorbing film or coating over its inner or outer surface. The shield may be of the material known by the Registered Trade Mark " Perspex " and may be shaped by using the tube as a male mould. A flange may be left on the finished shield and provided with fixing holes to assist in supporting the cathode ray tube. The shield, or its securing frame if one is used, may be shaped so as to spring over the region of maximum diameter of the envelope and may be clamped or cemented to the envelope.
