Abstract
Cyanobutane-tetracarboxylic esters and other derivatives are obtained by the reaction of esters of fumaric and maleic acids with hydrogen cyanide in presence of basic catalysts such as alkali metal salts of weak acids, under various conditions, followed by conversion by known methods into other derivatives. The initial products are isomeric mixtures containing 2-cyanobutane 1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetracarboxylic methyl or ethyl esters, when using the corresponding esters of fumaric or maleic acid. Another example also describes a similar product from maleic di-(2-ethylhexyl) ester. The cyanobutane tetracarboxylic methyl ester may be hydrolysed by acid, with loss of CO2 to give butane-1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetracarboxylic acid.
