Abstract

685,238. Gauges. MIDLAND TAR DISTILLERS, Ltd. Sept. 21, 1951 [Sept. 21, 1950], No. 23193/50. Class 106 (ii). A gauge for measuring the thickness of liquid coatings, such as tar, on a road surface, comprises a drum 2 with two concentric flanges 4 and between the flanges a series of pegs 6 with tips which lie at different distances beneath an imaginary cylindrical surface joining the circumferences of the flanges. To measure the thickness of the coating material the drum is rolled over the surface by means of the handle 8. The flanges penetrate the coating and rest on the surface beneath, the peg which is just wetted by the coating material indicates the depth of the material and may be calibrated in square yards per gallon of material. The gauge is rolled in two directions at right angles and the average figure of the two readings is taken.
