Abstract

684,920. Clocks; displaying. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd. S. Aug. 28, 1951 [Aug. 28, 1950], No. 21181/50. Classes 3 (i) and 139 In a clock mechanism a pivotal lever of the escapement has a pin and slot or other lost motion connection with one arm of a bell crank lever, the other arm of which constitutes a part of a pendulum which has a swinging motion about an axis which is adjustable relatively to a framework of the mechanism and is normal to that of the normal pivoted displacement of the escapement lever. The framework comprises two plates 10 and 11, Figs. 1 and 3, spaced by pillars 12 and supported on columns 13 mounted on a base 1.4. The mainspring 16, Fig. 3, drives the minute hand 20 through the wheel 17 and the pinion 18a. The hour hand 26 is driven through the motion work 22, 23, 24, 25. The escapement lever 35 co-operates with the escape wheel 32, Fig. 4, and is slotted at one end to embrace the end 38 of a wire loop 39, Fig. 2. The wire loop 39 is provided with two hooks 40, 41, which hook on to a bar 42 pivotally mounted on a bracket 45. A second wire loop 47 is attached to the loop 39 and supports a doll-like object 48. The loops 39, 47 and the object 48 form the pendulum which oscillates in a direction normal to the dial. If the base of the clock is not on the level the bar 42 is displaced about its pivot until an even " beat is obtained. The casing 15, Fig. 1, is of glass.
