Abstract
684,538. Spring suspensions. AUTO UNION GES. March 22, 1951 [March 24, 1950], No. 6922/51. Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii). In a spring suspension for rear wheels of road vehicles wherein each rear wheel is carried on a stub-axle which is connected by an arm to a torsion-bar spring mounted on the vehicle body or chassis transversely thereof, a point of attachment of the arm ends to the respective stub-axles is disposed approximately in the horizontal plane passing through the centre of gravity of the unloaded vehicle. In the arrangement shown, each arm comprises two flat bars 7 and 8 of rectangular cross-section which are rigidly connected together near their ends where they are attached to a torsion bar 4. The arms are separated for the remainder of their length and are arranged with their major axes in substantially vertical and horizontal planes respectively extending towards the planes of the C.G. of the vehicle, the bar 8 thus constituting a stabilizing bar. The bar 7 is rigidly secured to an anchor plate 11, which carries a stub-axle 13 and a flange 15 of a longitudinally split through axle 16. The end 18 of the bar 8 is connected to the plate 11 by means of a rubber mounting consisting of nested U-shaped metal members and interposed rubber pads bonded or otherwise secured thereto. The torsion bar 4 comprises an assembly of spring leaves housed within a tube 3 and secured internally thereof by a sleeve 5. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 (not shown), the bars 7 and 8 are connected to the anchor plate below and above the stub-axle respectively.
