The field of a Ward-Leonard generator is energized through grid-controlled rectifiers in accordance with the difference between a reference voltage and a voltage proportional to the motor speed. The speed voltage comprises the motor terminal voltage plus the I.R. drop across a series resistor to give the true B.E.M.F.
