Abstract

684,498. Ship propulsion. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP KONINKLIJKE MAATSCHAPPIJ DE SCHELDE. Feb. 24, 1950. [Feb. 24, 1949] No. 4823/50. Class 114. [Also in Group XXIX] In a ship propulsion installation of the type comprising two propeller shafts connected to the engines by means of non-positive couplings, any deviation in the synchronous running of the shafts is detected and a correcting signal applied to one or more of the engines. The detecting and controlling mechanism comprises relatively rotatable sleeve valves 25, 26 connected to and rotating with the two shafts. Pressure oil is fed continuously to the interior of the inner valve through a passage 33, groove 34, and ports 35, 36, and when relative movement between the two valves occurs due to loss of synchronisation of the two propeller shafts, one of the pairs of ports 40, 41 or 50, 51 in the two valves will start to coincide and the pressure oil will flow either to the top or the bottom of a piston 91. The particular pair of ports which overlap is determined by the direction in which the relative motion between the valves takes place, i.e. the sense in which the loss of synchronisation between the propeller shafts occurs. Movement of piston 94 adjusts a valve 95 controlling the flow of pressure fluid to a piston 99 which is connected to a member controlling the flow of fuel to one of the sets of engines. The exhaust fluid from servo-piston 91 flows to exhaust passage 03 through a valve 31 which is similar to, and is integral with, the fluid pressure inlet valve 21. As shown, the system is duplicated and the two systems are connected together in such manner that the correcting movement of servo-motor 99<SP>1</SP> is in the opposite direction to that provided by servo-motor 99. If there is negative lap between the pairs of ports 40, 41, &c. the two sides of piston 91 are interconnected by a passage 103 which is adjustably throttled by a needle valve 104. Should the pressure oil supply fail, valve 95 will be opened by its loading spring 102 to ensure a full supply of fuel being provided for the engines.
