Abstract
A testing agent for detecting surface cracks in castings &c (see Group XIX) comprises a water - insoluble, water-emulsifiable, flaw-penetrating oily testing liquid containing a non-fluorescent colouring material. The oily constituent may be a mineral oil or a commercial penetrating oil, or kerosene. To secure emulsifiability, an oil-soluble soap or other detergent or surface-tension reducing agent may be added. Alternatively, the emulsifier need not be oil-soluble, but a mutual solvent, e.g. an alcohol, for both emulsifier and oil must then be added. Examples of testing liquids given include (a) petroleum distillate 83 per cent, naphthenic acid soap 16.7 per cent, dye 0.3 per cent; (b) kerosene 77.6 per cent, octylaminoethanol soap of tetradecyl sulphuric acid 22 per cent, dye 0.4 per cent; (c) kerosene 53 per cent, sodium dodecyl benzenesulphonate 18 per cent, cyclohexanol (acting as the mutual solvent) 27 per cent, dye 2 per cent; (d) penetrating oil 67.3 per cent, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether 16 per cent, naphthenic acid soap 16 per cent, dye 0.7 per cent.
