Abstract

Stable resin syrups for use as adhesives, impregnants for textiles, paper, &c. are obtained by reacting aqueous formaldehyde at a pH of 3-10 with a mixture of melamine and urea, the urea content being from 5-35 per cent by weight of the mixture, until the condensate obtained has a water tolerance of not less than 3 : 1 at 20 DEG C., concentrating the condensate by dehydration under vacuum until the water removed lies between 10 and 40 per cent by weight of the condensate, and then diluting the concentrated condensate with an alcohol containing not more than 5 carbon atoms until a syrup of desired resin content is obtained. Preferably not less than 2 mols. formaldehyde per mol. urea plus 3 mols. per mol. melamine are employed. The formaldehyde is preferably initially adjusted to a pH of 4-6. The ratio of the volume of water added to the original volume of syrup until the mixture just becomes opalescent gives the water tolerance referred to. Alcohols specified for dilution are methanol, ethanol, propyl, butyl and amyl alcohols. A table is given in the Specification showing the shelf life, viscosity, water tolerance and reaction conditions of condensates obtained by reacting 252 parts of melamine with 40, 60, 40, 120 parts urea and 736, 823, 628, 862 parts formalin respectively.
