Abstract

8-Haloxanthine salts of N-dialkylaminoalkyl - N - arylmethyl - a - aminopyridines are made by mixing hot solutions of the compounds in suitable solvents and cooling. Ammonium salts of the 8-haloxanthine may also be used. Examples of the preparation of 8-chloro- and 8-bromotheophylline salts of N-b -dimethylaminoethyl - N - benzyl - a - aminopyridine, the 8-chlorotheophylline salts of N-benzyl, N - b - diethylaminoethyl - and N - p - methoxybenzyl - N - b - dimethylaminoethyl - a -aminopyridine, the 8-bromotheophylline salt of N - b - dimethylaminoethyl - N - p - methoxybenzyl-a -aminopyridine and the 8-chloroxanthine salt of the corresponding N-benzyl-N-b -diethylaminoethyl compound are given. Other 8-haloxanthines, all having H- in the 7-position, specified, include iodo- and halogenalkylxanthines.
