A suction cleaner or an air filter apparatus comprises a filter bag, 23 Fig. 3, removably mounted in an upwardly spring-biased opening and closing member 16 mounted in a compartment 9 and having releasable latch and other means e.g., a latch 43 and bolt 42 responsive to a predetermined filled condition of the bag 23 for automatically releasing said means to permit opening of said member 16. This bag receiving member is hinged at a pin 17 to the cleaner shell 13 and is biased upwardly by a spring 44 to indicate clogging of the bag 23 on the automatic withdrawal of the bolt 42 following energisation of an electromagnetic relay 56', Fig. 7. The armature of the relay 56' is operatively connected to a bolt actuator 46 through a rod 59, and a lever 57 which on retraction of the armature depresses a lever 47 to raise the actuator 46 and thus release the bolt 42; the relay being energised on closing a switch 62 actuated by a pressure responsive bellows 63 in the filter compartment 9, or by distention of the bag 23. Manual actuation of the actuator 46 and hence of the bolt 42 is effected by a push-button 45 operatively connected to a cam 55 and to levers 49, 48, 47 Fig. 8. As shown the bag receiving member is applied to a cleaner which is readily propelled along the floor on two wheels by force applied by the operator to the suction hose as described in Specification 645,847. In a modification the cleaner is mounted on three wheels to assist portability, or alternatively it rests on the floor. Specification 682,940/51 also is referred to.
