Classes 120(ii), 120(iii) and 142(iv)'[Also in Group XXII] Appartus for varying the twist in filamentary material, such as wire, or cotton or rayon tyre cords, particularly those coated with a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, comprises a rotatable carrier 1 adapted to support a stock drum 6, means for braking the drum 6, a freely rotatable pulley 42 mounted on the carrier 1, a rotatable supporting shaft 44 for a take-up bobbin 69 located adjacent to the pulley 42, means for rotating the carrier 1 to impart a twist to the material, means for rotating the bobbin 69 a. predetermined amount for each rotation of the carrier 1 and means for providing relative movement between the bobbin 69 and the pulley 42 to wind the material helically on the bobbin. The stock drum 6 is mounted on the carrier 1 between a spring-influenced plunger 18 and a rod 7a provided with a cylindrical head 9 having a centering peg 11 and a driving peg 13. A friction drag washer 15 is located between the head 9 and a fixed flange 16. Rotation of the carrier 1 is effected by a spindle 4, shaft 30 and an electric motor 39. Material drawn from the drum 6 is passed once round the pulley 42, so as to maintain the twist between the pulley 42 and the bobbin 69. Bobbin 69 has means for accommodating a transfer tail and is held on the shaft 44 by a cap 73 secured by a split ring 74 and rotated by a driving peg 71 on a collar 70. A chain 54 transmits drive from the shaft 30 to a shaft 44 and the latter is given a sliding motion by a lever 58 oscillated by a gear wheel 63 provided with a cam groove 62. The apparatus has particular application in the preparation of cords for weftless tyre fabric as described in Specification 682,438, [Group VIII]. Warping. According to the Provisional Specification, the warps of woven fabrics may be pre-stressed, preferably to the extent of one turn of twist for each coil on the warp package.
