Abstract

682,144. Respiratory appliances. BUTT, J. T., HAYWARD-. May 3, 1951 [May 11, 1950], No. 10404/51. Class 81 (ii). A respiratory appliance for administering anµsthetics or analgesics, or for inflating the lungs with air or oxygen, comprises an impregnating chamber which serves as a reservoir for a liquid anaesthetic, a main passage through which air is inhaled, a branch passage having one end communicating with the main passage and its other end terminating in the impregnating chamber and out of contact with the body of liquid, an air deflecting valve whereby the air inhaled or entering into the main passage may be deflected partly or wholly through the branch passage, into the impregnating chamber, back to the main passage and thence to the lungs, and an expiratory valve in the main passage between the branch or return passage and the face mask or other delivery attachment of the appliance. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the impregnating chamber 1 contains an apertured holder 10 for an ampoule 11 of anµsthetic, the anµsthetic being released when required by screwing down a plunger 19 so as to break the ampoule. A branch passage 2 extends from within the chamber 1 to a main passage 3 and has located within it a valve comprising a vane 27 carried by a knob 29. Air entering the inlet 4 of the main passage is deflected, to an extent determined by the position of the vane 27, into the chamber 1 and thence back through the branch 2 to the delivery end 5 of the main passage. The delivery end of the main passage is provided with an adjustable, pressure - responsive, expiratory valve (not shown).
