682,020. Concentrating chromite ore. MATTHEWS, E. F. (Beers, G. H.). May 19, 1950, No. 12642/50. Class 82(i) The iron content of chromite ore is reduced by a process in which chlorine gas and a gaseous hydrocarbon such as propane are mixed, subjected to catalytic action and reacted with finely divided chromite ore at a temperature above that at which ferric chloride will form but below that at which chromic chloride will form, the treated ore being then separated from the resulting gases. In the apparatus shown in the figure, ten volumes of chlorine and one volume of a hydrocarbon gas are fed into a mixer 1, passed through a quartz tube 2 in which it is subjected to ultra-violet light from lamp 3, mixed with chromite ore whch is fed by hopper and worm conveyer unit 5, and pass into the reaction chamber 4 heated to a temperature between 324‹C. and 700‹C, The products of reaction are withdrawn by conveyer 6 to chamber 7 in which gases and solids are separated, the gases being taken through condensers 8, 9 and 10 to remove ferric chloride and water vapour and then via pump 12 through a bed of hot coke 13 in which carbon dioxide is reduced to monoxide and finally returned to the circuit in advance of the gas-ore mixing stage.
