A safety device for gas burners 1 having a pilot burner 18 comprises an inner valve controlling member 11 of magnetic material, vertically slidable in a non-magnetic gastight sleeve 12 to close a gas inlet valve 5 by its weight, a thermosensitive element 15 heated by the pilot burner and carrying an outer valve controlling member 16 of magnetic material such that when the element is cold the controlling member is spaced from the end of the sleeve, as shown in dotted lines, and when it is hot the member is close to the sleeve, as shown in full lines, at least one of the controlling members being a permanent magnet whereby, when the pilot burner is alight, mutual attraction raises the inner controlling member to open the valve. Either one or both of the members may be a permanent magnet, the valve being opened by a spring 10. The thermosensitive element may be a fluid-filled tube sealed by a diaphragm acting through a rack on an adjustably spring-loaded lever carrying the outer controlling member, or a tube and rod acting through a rack on a lever carrying the member. The inner member may be a U-shaped magnet.
