Abstract

1477110 Water heaters: burner control systems A TROTTER and U TROTTER 20 Nov 1975 [22 Nov 1974] 47803/75 Addition to 1413732 Headings F4A and F4T [Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A liquid heater having a magnetic member 7 responsive to variation in the flow of liquid includes a burner 15 having a control system including a valve 14 comprising first and second chambers 16, 17 separated by a diaphragm 18, the first chamber 16 having a gas inlet 20 and an outlet 21 connected to the burner 15, the diaphragm 18 being movable between a position in which it closes the outlet 21 and one in which the outlet is open, a duct 35, 36, 48, 49 connecting the first and second chambers, and a magnetically actuable valve responsive to the magnetic member 7 and a manually adjustable heat responsive valve 38a, both arranged to control the exhaust of gas from the second chamber through the duct. Gas enters the valve 14 through a valve 22, which is biased closed by a spring but is held open by a solenoid 23 if a thermoelectric device 24 senses a flame at pilot burner 25, and fills both chambers 16, 17 through duct 35; as the pressures are equal the diaphragm is biased by a spring to close the outlet 21. When no water flows in heater coil 4 the magnetic member will be at its lowest position so that its N pole is adjacent that of magnetic piston 11, urging resilient disc 12 against seat 13 to prevent flow of gas in the ducts 48, 49; when water flows the magnetic member 7 rises, attracting the piston 11 to open the valve, so that the pressure in chamber 17 falls and outlet 21 is opened and gas flows through manual on-off valve 26 to the burner 15. The path of gas from the chamber 17 to the duct 48 includes a perforated pin 37 whose outlet may be closed by a conical member 40 moved in response to the expansion of fluid in bulb 43 located in the heater coil 4; the pin 37 is threaded so that its position relative to the member 40 can be adjusted by a knob 38. This thermostatically-operated valve is bypassed by a duct 44 having a regulating screw 45 to maintain a minimum flame. For initial ignition knob 29 is depressed to open the valve 22 to allow gas to flow through duct 27 to the pilot burner 25; the knob 29 can only be depressed when the main gas valve 26 is in the closed position. The exhaust of gas from the chamber 17 is through an ignition retarding valve having a perforated disc 33 to ensure gradual opening of the outlet 21.
