Class 40 (i) [Also in Groups IX and XXXVI] In apparatus for determining the mean deviation from average of an electrical signal representing a physical magnitude e.g. the quantity of substance in the cross-section of textile slivers, yarns or rovings, the fluctuating signal component representing the deviations from the average value and the steady component representing the average value are separated by a low-pass filter and the former component is rectified, averaged in a second low-pass filter, and measured by an electrical recording instrument. In Fig. 3 an electrical instrument 30 of the kind described in Specification 638,365, [Group XXXVI], for measuring the quantity of substance in textile slivers supplies a fluctuating signal for a capacitance-resistance (or inductance) low-pass filter 31 whose output, representing the steady average value, is measured by a recording instrument 32, 33. The alternating signal across the ends of filter resistances 40, 42, 44, representing the deviations from the average value, energizes a bridge rectifier 34 through a condenser 39, and the unidirectional output is applied to a second resistance-capacitance low-pass filter 35 to produce a steady output, representing the mean deviation from the average value, which is measured by a recording instrument 36, 37. The rectifier or measuring instrument characteristics may be such that the R.M.S. value of the deviation is recorded.
