Abstract
681,353. Continuous casting-machines. GERBER, J. S. June 5, 1950 [March 4, 1949], No. 5985/49. Class 83 (i). [Also in Groups XXXV and XL (b)] Apparatus for casting metal includes a container for molten metal and means for maintaining the level therein, said means comprising a radioactive or X-ray emitter and a detector thereof arranged on opposite sides of the container so that when the level rises it reduces the amount of radiation falling on the detector. This may operate an indicator or level controlling means or both. In the machine shown radium &c. in a holder 22 acting through a bottomless mould 11 affects a Geiger counter 23 or the like, the output of which is amplified and smoothed by a device 24 and holds open a switch 26 whereby the current driving a motor 21 passes through a resistance 27 and the roll 17 is driven slowly. When the molten metal rises it obstructs the radiation and the switch 26 short-circuits the resistance 27 so that the roll 17 is driven fast and the level in the mould 11 falls. In a modification the motor is stopped instead of driving slowly, two sources of radiation and two detectors at different levels being used, the lower to stop and the upper to start the motor. Metal-pouring.-In another modification the detector can control the flow of molten metal into the container by operating a motor for adjusting the tilt of a ladle or furnace or the opening of the nozzle 12 thereof. The detector may operate an audible or visible warning, the operator then altering the speed of the molten or solid metal manually if there is no automatic control.
