Abstract

Dialkyl ethers in which one of the alkyl groups is unsaturated are made by heating a dialkyl acetal in the presence of a fluidized catalyst comprising barium oxide on silica gel. Advantageously, the catalyst passes an 80-200 mesh screen (American units). Preferred temperatures are 200-350 DEG C. and space velocities of vaporized acetal between 0.2 and 10. In examples (1) diethyl, and (2) dimethyl acetals are heated in fluidized barium oxide on silica gel (made by heating a mixture of barium hydroxide and silica gel) to yield ethyl and methyl vinyl ethers respectively.
