Abstract

680,884. Reaping-machines. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Feb. 22. 1951 [Feb. 23, 1950], No. 4328/51. Class 6(iii) A reaping-machine reel, of the kind wherein the reel is mounted on a carrier 8 slidable vertically on guides 12, is provided with change-speed gear-box 17 in the power-drive to the reel, the gear-box being connected to the reel-carrier so that lowering of the reel automatically increases the speed of rotation of the reel and also automatically alters the feathering of combing slats 20 carried by the arms 19 of the reel. The reel comprises spaced, arm-carrying hubs 18 rotating on an axle 9 on the carrier 8, the arms being interconnected by tined slats 20. The axle 9 is driven through bevel gears and jointed shafts, Fig. 2 (not shown), from the gearbox 1'7 and the change-speed mechanism is operated by a lever 35 carrying a pivoted arm 43 at its upper end which is engaged by an abutment 53 on the reel-carrier 8 when the latter is lowered. The drive 33 to the gear-box is derived from a tractor take-off. The reel-carrier is adjusted on its guides by a hand-lever 6 pivoted on a. link 3 on the main frame 1. The slats 20 are connected to the arms 24 of a spider which includes a cam ring 25 riding on rollers 27 on an eccentric member 26 carried on the axle 9. The eccentric is adjustable by a telescopic rod 29 mounted on the lever 6 so that movement of the lever in lowering the reel alters the feathering of the slats 20. The guide frame 12 may be tilted forward without any change of height of the reel, this movement being accompanied by an alteration in the feathering of the slats 20.
