Abstract

An elastic stocking is so formed as to provide a compression which decreases from the foot upwards so as to compensate for hydrostatic pressure in the veins. This is done by cutting the fabric proportionally smaller towards the foot so that the degree of tension, when the stocking is worn, is correspondingly greater. The dimensions may be ascertained by measuring the circumference at vertically spaced points on the leg or by using a paper or fabric gauge, Fig. 9 (not shown), having a central strip from which a series of ribs project. This is placed against the leg and the ribs are folded closely around it, their ends being overlapped and stuck together. The ribs are then cut and the gauge removed, the resulting lengths of the ribs indicating the leg circumference at the corresponding points.
