Abstract

680,462. Winches for hauling cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1950. [Dec. 28, 1949] No. 33118/49. Class 78 (v). Apparatus for pulling an electric cable or the like into a duct or along a trench, comprises a winch 4 mounted on a support structure 1 and a first boom 5 pivotally secured to one end thereof so as to be capable of swinging in a vertical plane and carrying at its other end a second boom 15 adapted to depend from it into said duct or trench and carrying a pulley 25 for guiding the winch rope upwards on its way from said cable or the like to the winch drum. Figs. I and 4. First boom 5, composed of members 6, 9, 10 and cross member 11, is pivoted at 13 to carriage support 1 and carries vertical guides 20, 21 along which guides slides second boom 15, the boom 15 being slidably held to the boom 5 by U-pieces 19 welded to either boom. The winch rope from winch 4 passes around pulley 26 mounted on first boom 5, around dynamometer pulley 34 and then passes around pulley 25 (mounted on the second boom 15) to the electric cable to be hauled thereby. The position of second boom 15 relative to first boom 5 is adjustably fixed by pins 22 passing through holes 2, 3 formed in the second boom 15. The dynamometer pulley 34 registers the rope tension on dynamometer 29 supported on trunnions 30 in slot 31 formed in said first boom 5. Alternatively, the second boom may be pivotally secured to the free end of the first boom and the pulley may be movably positioned on said second boom. Figs. 4, 5. The booms are raised (or lowered) by an auxiliary winch 35, the rope from which passes over pulley 26 and is secured to the lower end of the second boom 15, the tension in said rope first causing second boom 15 to slide relative to first boom 5 and then causing a pivoting movement of both booms together to swing them as a unit about pivot 13 on to the carriage support 1.
