679,988. Claw clutches; operating clutches. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. April 14, 1950, No. 9286/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group VIII] A clutch for controlling the rotation of a helical cutter 17 (see Group VIII) comprises a driving plate 180 which is rotatably mounted on the cutter shaft 18 and carries three angularly-spaced spring-pressed pawls 193 co-operating with a single notch 183 in a plate 182 keyed to the shaft, the action of the pawls being controlled by a roller 200 on a slidable shaft 197. This shaft, which carries rollers 198, 199 at opposite ends, is movable axially to position the roller 200 for disengaging the operative pawl 193 by the coaction of the roller 198 with a single cam 210 on a disc 33 keyed to the shaft 18; it is moved in the opposite direction by the coaction of the roller 199 with one of three cams 215 spaced similarly to the pawls 193 on a disc 32 which, together with the plate 180, is driven by chain and sprocket mechanism 30. In operation, disengagement of the operative pawl 193 by the roller 200 is followed by an ineffective period of the clutch for one-third of a revolution of the plate 180 until the next pawl 193 engages the notch 183. The shaft 18 is then rotated for one revolution, after which the cam 210 positions the roller 200 again to disengage the drive. The plate 182 is fixed in desired angular position on the shaft 18 by bolts 190 engaging arcuate slots in a plate 185 keyed to the shaft 18.
