Abstract

679,812. Knitting - machines. BATA, NARODNI PODNIK. Oct. 16, 1946 [Feb. 15, 1943], No. 30770/46. Class 74 (ii). A mechanism is adapted to be connected to the take-up mechanism of a circular machine so as to operate the take-up rollers and effect take-up of the fabric during reciprocating knitting, for example, during the knitting of the foot of a stocking. A ratchet wheel 7 is positioned on the end of one of the rollers, which are geared together, and is operated to rotate the rollers by a pawl 8 pivotally attached at one end of a lever 9 which itself is pivoted at 10 to a bracket 3. A pin 11 carries, during rotary knitting, a roller engaging with a cam surface 18 such that as the take-up mechanism revolves the lever 9 is actuated to cause the pawl 8 to rotate the rollers, but during reciprocatory knitting the pin 11 pivotally supports an arm 12 from the end of which extends a rod 14 having a hooked end 15. The take-up mechanism is positioned adjacent the toothed quadrant 21 imparting a reciprocatory motion to the needle cylinder and a pin 30 extends from the quadrant in the path of the rod 14. A spring 31 connected to the arm 12 and the lever 9 retains the rod 14 in engagement with the pin 30. As the quadrant 21 reciprocates about its pivot the rod 14 follows in abutment with the pin 30. The path of the hooked end 15 revolving about the pin 11, however, intersects and passes below the path of the pin 30 on the quadrant such that the pin 30 engages the hooked end 15 raising the arm 12 to cause the pawl 8 to actuate the ratchet 7 and thereby rotate the rollers. When the quadrant returns in the reverse direction the rod 14 remains engaged with the pin 30 under the action of a spring 17 and thereby returns gradually to its initial position. When it is desired to stop take-up of the fabric being knitted, such for example during the knitting of a heel or toe of a stocking, a bell crank lever 36 is operated by a cam 35 on a drum 34 to cause a spring-loaded arm 42 to engage a pin 32 on the arm 12 and prevent movement of the arm 12. If the arm 12 is on its return stroke, it is engaged by a cam surface 43 on the arm 42 and raises the arm 42 against a spring 45 and passes on to another cam surface 44 which retains it in its initial position. The rod 14 may be adjusted in the arm 12 to effect the amount of take-up by the rollers.
