Abstract

679,616. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. ASKANIA REGULATOR CO. Feb. 28, 1948 [Sept. 28, 1946], No. 6347/48. Class 135 [Also in Group XXXV] In an electric arc furnace in which each electrode is moved by a hydraulic servomotor controlled by a pair of solenoids, one responsive to arc voltage and the other to arc current, the rate of movement of the electrode is normally limited by a first pair of stops which may be over-ridden to allow a higher rate, in turn limited by a pair of fixed stops. Each electrode 11 is moved by a hydraulic motor 6 controlled as to speed and direction by a pivoted jet pipe 19 co-operating with port 20 or port 21. The jet pipe is controlled by a solenoid 28 energised by a current transformer 52 according to arc current, and by an opposing solenoid 29 energised by a transformer 61 according to the arc voltage. Hence the ratio of are voltage to arc current is normally held constant by the solenoid cores 36, 36a, moving on suspension spring 39, 39a, between adjustable spring stops 40, 40a. When striking the arc, or under abnormal operating conditions, one solenoid will be energised very much more than the other, and the end of the suspension spring 39 or 39a snaps past the end of the first stop 40 or 40a, as the case may be, allowing the electrode to move at a higher rate, limited by an extension of the core meeting an adjustable, rigid stop 45 or 45a. A screw 46 in the current solenoid 28 bears against the suspension spring 39 to bias the system to raise the electrode if the power fails. Specification 629,394 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, also discloses a modification, Fig. 2, (Cancelled), in which the solenoids 35<SP>1</SP>, 35a<SP>1</SP>, act on cores at either end of a pivoted beam balance which in addition to an arm 76 operating the regulator, has an arm 75 located between a pair of spring- loaded plungers 84, 85 which act as first, yielding limits, the housings of the plungers forming fixed limits. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
