Abstract

Soaps of guanidine and its hydrocarbon substitution products are prepared by reacting a fatty acid with the free base or the carbonate, hydrochloride or nitrate thereof. Reference is made to guanidine laurate, myristate, palmitate, stearate, oleate, linoleate and linolenate, and to the preparation of soaps from phenylguanidine carbonate.ALSO:A buffing and polishing composition in solid or liquid form comprises a finely divided abravise and a soap of guanidine or of a hydrocarbon substitution product thereof. Guanidine soaps specified are guanidine stearate, oleate, palmitate, laurate, myristate, linoleate, and linolenate; soaps of phenylguanidine are also mentioned. In an example of a solid composition, an acid obtained in the distillation of stearic acid, known as tank bottoms, together with a small amount of petrolatum is heated with guanidine carbonate and finely divided abrasive is slowly added to the melted mass. According to another example, oleostearine, stearic acid, and guanidine carbonate are melted together and finely divided abrasive is added. A liquid composition in the form of a heavy slurry for application to buffing wheels comprises, besides the abrasive, motor oil, water soluble oil (a grade of oleic acid), guanidine carbonate, and water. In other liquid compositions, mineral oil and kerosene are incorporated, together with Twitchell oil. Specified abrasives are silica, e.g. quartz, aluminium oxide, silicon carbides, ferric oxide, chromic oxide, emery, tripoli, pumice and barytes.
