Abstract
678,619. Butterfly valves. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 3, 1950 [Jan. 13, 1949], No. 113/50. Class 135. In a butterfly valve, the closure member 21 is formed of resilient sheet material and has a sealing rim 30 formed as a convolution. The closure member is held on an operating shaft by a backing plate 22 and a retainer plate 23 secured by screws 24. The convolution is of semi - toroidal form and is pressed outwardly against the cylindrical housing 11 by the inlet pressure. It is also of such diameter as to be slightly compressed by the housing during assembly. The convolution has a pronounced annular ridge 32, the plane of which is offset from the axis of the shaft a distance A at least equal to the radius of the shaft. This results in the upper edge of the closure member engaging the housing 11 first and snapping over from the point 33 to the point 32a, Fig. 3, before the lower edge engages the housing. In Fig. 6 the closure member 21<SP>11</SP> is of dihedral form being bent along a line 40 by the backing and retaining plates 22<SP>11</SP>, 23<SP>11</SP> which are shaped accordingly. In this case the top and bottom points 32a" and 32b<SP>11</SP> engage the housing 11 at the same time and no snap action is obtained. The bend in the closure member may be preformed if desired. In another modification, also without snap action, the closure member and the plates are cylindrically curved about the axis of the shaft 12. Fig. 7 shows a closure member 21<SP>111</SP> with two annular convolutions 41, these being preferable where thicker material is used.
