Abstract

678,580. Motor-vehicle driving arrangements. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd. March 22, 1951 [March 23, 1950], No. 7251/50. Class 79(ii) [Also in Group XXXII] A four-wheel drive and suspension arrangement c o mprises a fixed axle casing having at each end a pair of wheels each of which is carried by longitudinally disposed and vertically movable parallel links, each wheel being driven from the end of the axle by separate gearing. Such gearing preferably consists of a chain drive arranged between and parallel to the links. The two wheels on one side of the vehicle may be sprung by a longitudinally arranged leaf spring, or helical springs may be used. As shown in Fig. 2, side elevation, and Fig. 3 which is a plan with the leaf spring omitted, each wheel carrier 20 is carried by upper and lower parallel links 19, 18 articulated to a casing 15 fixed to the end of the axle casing and to the frame. Drive to each wheel is transmitted from gear 14 on the axle end to an intermediate gear 23 fixed to shaft 24 which also carriers a pair of chain sprockets 25, thence by two chains and sprockets 27 to stub axle 26. Stub axle 26 may transmit the drive to the road wheel through an epicyclic reduction gear. The chain drive is enclosed by a casing 32. The chain drive is arranged so that the spacing of the sprocket centres remain constant during wheel deflections. The laminated spring 22 is pivotally mounted on the casing 15 and each end bears on one of the wheel carrier casings 20. Each such casing has a lateral projection 29 at its upper end whose travel is limited by buffers 31 mounted on a bracket 30 fixed to the frame.
