Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0678489/IV (b)/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl radical, and metal salts of such compounds. They are prepared by (a) reacting nicotinic acid or its anhydride, halide or ester with a compound of the formula <FORM:0678489/IV (b)/2> or (b) by reacting a phosphorus trihalide with a compound of the formula <FORM:0678489/IV (b)/3> and reacting with water the halide of formula <FORM:0678489/IV (b)/4> (where X is a halogen atom) so produced. Sodium, calcium, iron, manganese, cobalt and copper salts are mentioned, the heavy metal salts being prepared from the alkali-metal salts. In examples, there are prepared by method (a) compounds of the above formula where R represents (1 to 3) hydrogen, (4) methyl and ethyl. By method (b) is prepared (using phosphorus trichloride) (5) nicotinylaminomethylene phosphonic acid. The N-methyl and N-ethyl compounds may be made similarly. The product of (5) is converted to its iron salt (example 6) by dissolving it in sodium hydroxide solution in an inert atmosphere and adding ferrous chloride solution. By either process (a) or (b) may be prepared compounds of the above formula where R is a propyl, benzyl or phenyl radical.
