Abstract

676,824. Sparking preventing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and STEVENS, S. A. Jan. 30, 1951. [March 6, 1950]. No. 5556/50. Class 38 (v). In D.C. signalling or control apparatus for mines &c. sparking due to the breaking of an inductive circuit such as a relay 1 is prevented by connecting a rectifier 11 across the inductive circuit and rectifiers 10, 12, in the conductors leading to it. The circuit is normally 2, 10, 1, 12, 3. Should it be broken, the discharge current from the relay winding will be absorbed by the rectifier 11, which is arranged in the reverse direction to the other rectifiers. Accidental reversal of the polarity of the conductors 2, 3 will produce no ill effect.
