Abstract

676,628. Hardening photographic layers. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. April 11, 1950 [April 11, 1949], No. 9776/49. Class 98 (ii). A water-soluble hydantoine-formaldehyde resinous condensation product is incorporated into gelatine-containing photographic layers such as silver halide emulsion layers or other layers, as of multilayer material. Incorporation may be effected by mixing the condensation product with the gelatine or the coating solution, by bathing the layer after coating in a solution of the product, or adding the latter to a layer adjacent to the one to be hardened.. The hardening may be improved by the presence of a carbocyclic compound' having at least one nuclear OH group. In four examples, a gelatine-silver halide emulsion is hardened by incorporation therein, per kilogram of emulsion, (1) 0.4 gram of a 5: 5-dimethylhydantoineformaldehyde condensation product, 0.2 gram resorcinol and 0.1 gram 2 4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde ; (2) 4 grams of the condensation product of example 1 ; (3) 3.5 grams of hydantoine-formaldehyde condensation product; (4) 0.5 gram of the product of example 3, 0.2 gram resorcinol, 0.04 gram phloroglucinol and 0.1 gram 2 : 4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Preparation of the condensation products is described.
