Abstract

676,180. Cutting vegetables. SIDES SOC. ANON. Oct. 25, 1950 [Oct. 27, 1949; Nov. 23, 1949; June 19, 1950], No. 25946/50. Class 5(i) The hand rotated cutters 11 of a vegetable cutter are designed to have a progressive scissors-like actior with upstanding stationary cutters 10 with which they remain in contact, such action being obtained by suitably shaping the rota ted cutters 11, such as angular in Figs. 1 and 2 curved as in Fig. 3 or by making the stationary cutters 10 non-radial as in Fig 4. A spring 9 urges the movable cutters down on the bottom cutters 10, the reaction being taken by a diametrical bar 5 which can be removed from its securing hooks 4 to take out the spindle 6 and the cutters 11. Openings 12 allow the cut material to pass through. The effective area of such openings 12 is adjustable by co-operating slots 14 in a sheet metal disc 13, Fig. 5, underneath which can be slid round and clamped by a screw 15 in a slot 16 to the bottom 2. In a modification, Fig. 6, the container comprises bayonet jointed upper and lower parts 1 and 2 the part 1 being of reduced diameter to facilitate hand gripping. The top of 1 has openings to drop in the vegetables. The cutter 11 is of bent cross-section and slopes away from the container wall, and is rotated by an arm 22 through a flexible rod 25. The arm 22 has a finger hole 26 by which it can be rotated. In a modification of the internal fittings of Fig. 6 or Fig. 1 both sets of cutters are mounted on the same rotated spindle 6 but the upper cutters 28 are held stationary when they engage a stop projecting inside the container body while the lower cutters 1 continue to rotate with the spindle. This provides a preliminary cutting between 28 and 11, the final cut being done between the lower edges of 11 and the cutters 10 in the bottom of the container. Fig. 13 shows a set of multiple cutters on the spindle 6, alternate cutters 28<SP>4</SP> and 28<SP>6</SP> being held stationary by similar stops while the other cutters produce multiple cutting on both their top and bottom edges. Fig. 15 shows stationary cutters 28<SP>8</SP> and movable cutters 11 both provided with teeth. The bottom of the container may have comb-like exit slots 12<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 17, additional to the radial slots 12 in front of the cutters 10. Such slots 12<SP>1</SP> provide tongues 34 which vibrate during cutting to release the cut particles more easily. The tongues 34 are bent upwardly but their tips are lower than the edge of the stationary cutters 12. The height of the tongues determines the fineness of the cut particles.
