[Also in Group XXIII] In a hydraulically - operated well boring bit in which there is imposed on the bit 1 an intermittent rotary and percussive movement, the hydraulic motor 42 is connected to the drill pipe by a connector 48, bush 61 and connecting pipe 57 and is so positioned by the bush concentrically within a sleeve 6 so as to leave an annular passage between the cylinder 42 and the sleeve 6. Normally, hydraulic fluid passes from the drill pipe down pipe 57 through ports on a double cone valve 51, down pipes 46 and 70 to valve control apparatus 33 and out through ports 35 to act on the underside of piston 43 so causing the bit to be raised. This movement moves the control sleeve 30 relative to the member 33 to shut off the supply of fluid to the underside of the piston 43 and to permit this pressure fluid to escape through parts 34 and channel 21 to the vicinity of the bit which drops, and the cycle is repeated. The double cone valve 51 is threaded onto the pipe 57 but is prevented from rotating when this pipe is rotated because it engages with abutments in the bush 61 so that rotation of the pipe causes axial movement to regulate, as desired, all or part of the pressure fluid down the pipe 46 and through ports 54 to bypass the motor and escape via the annular passage between the cylinder 42 and the sleeve 6. A pin on the cylinder casing engages an inclined slot in the drill bit and so, in conjunction with a ratchet unit, vertical movement of the bit causes it to rotate.
